During a recent trip to Washington D.C. it rained almost everyday, but I believe there is always something to photograph in every weather situation. Having said that, I want to make sure to point out that I agree with my best friend Michelle in the idea that photographing statues or sculptures is not a reflection of talent by the photographer since they are photographing someone else’s artwork. This was a photography exercise in exploring the subject just for fun and I wanted to share! Fortunately for me, Shannon and Kim had several cool places that were special to them as a couple. I had to check all of them out and my favorite was the Contemporary Art Museum in Cincinnati, Ohio. The artwork shown in the middle image below is by Shepard Fairey. Having beautiful light in a amazing location with such a fun couple is an automatic awesome day for me!!

When I needed my wedding dress altered I called Lora at Van Lear Bridals to do the job. She did a great job and we became fast friends! Her shop is so unique and interesting that I had to go back and do a little personal shoot for myself. I love dress forms and she has several to choose from. Lora can fix anything and is an incredible designer. Stop by to look through her sketch book…she is so talented!!

Lately, I have been working on some shoots and images for a company that I cannot blog. So for fun, I thought I would share this little shoot in the meantime! Thanks, Lora for letting me play in your shop!

PERSONAL PORTFOLIO PROJECT

Earlier this year I decided to print a personal portfolio that would be just for me. The more any photographer shoots, the more you will see that photographer’s personal style and preferences. As I looked through my images, I can see those preferences repeating themselves. Actually, they are the same preferences I had when I was as a kid. When I would pick out a page to color in a coloring book, I always wanted that page to have one subject that was not too busy with the elements in the background. In a way, I am making my own coloring books now with this portfolio. It was a fun project and I really enjoy having a printed book that has a nice flow. Since the students that I taught had to submit a portfolio to the instructors to get their degree, I thought it would be fun to submit mine. F.Y.I., I passed and no, I wasn’t one of the judges! Below you can click on the thumbnails to see which images were included. A special thank you to all of the models in the images that trusted me by letting me do whatever I thought was best! I love working with people and making new artwork!

Shooting with me is like being in a Chinese fire drill. Thankfully Chaz, Becky, and the boys were game! We ran all over Dayton and took advantage of the beautiful 70 degree weather in December! I love to try and visit at least one new location or try a new idea every shoot and I am so glad we did. I am very happy we had a chance to get some great images!

I am very excited to share the winners of the “Shoot for Yourself” photography contest!! There are notes under each image about what each photographer did differently from their normal routine to shoot for themselves. I am very happy with the results and the variety, wow! 1st Place-Flower by Rene Woods Bechard

2nd Place-Little Boy Outside by John Fox

3rd Place-Christmas Ornaments by Becky Gardner

Honorable Mention-B-52 Stratofortress by John Bonnett

1st Place-Rene Woods Bechard pushed herself to experiment with flash while photographing this flower instead of natural light. Flowers are photographed quite a bit so if you are going to photograph a flower it needs to be done very well. This image has a nice composition, interesting color, and beautiful detail. Great job!

2nd Place-John Fox is drawn to photographing landscapes and nature, so he decided to push himself by shooting portraiture. This image has a nice fall/winter feel due to the warm light and depth of field. The expression is intriguing.

3rd Place-Becky Gardner is a new and upcoming portrait photographer that is experimenting with non-traditional poses. This image really captures the mood of the Christmas season.

Honorable Mention-John Bonnett decided to try working with HDR processing and layering images to deliver a new way to view the B-52 Stratofortress. The statistics of the B-52 layered over the image reinforces the importance of this plane.
